Strategic Design of the Forest Biorefinery: Data Will Matter Even More in the Future
Increasingly, forest product companies are seeking to transform their businesses and diversify their revenues through the implementation of biorefinery processes and the manufacturing of bioproducts, such as biofuels, biochemicals and biomaterials. This presentation will cover the “generic” approach being considered by many forestry companies for setting biorefinery strategy and producing “green” biorefinery products in addition to pulp and paper products. It will also cover how these “generic” biorefinery strategies can be used to organize and distinguish between hundreds of emerging biorefinery technologies and to balance critical issues such as corporate objectives, mill-specific characteristics, technology scale-up, and uncertain market demand. With a phased implementation approach, manufacturing flexibility, and supply chain management, companies can mitigate market risk due to market price volatility, as they establish their competitive position for the longer-term.
Pulp & Paper
Paul Stuart joined the Chemical Engineering Department at Polytechnique Montreal in 2000 to become Chairholder of the NSERC Chair in Design Engineering. In his research program, Paul addresses industry-driven problems using product and process design methodologies and systems analysis tools, targeting the forest products industry and its transformation to new business models such as the biorefinery. In 2010, Paul co-founded and is today Principal Consultant of EnVertis Inc, a consultancy seeking to assist forest product companies with business transformation. He is also the current Scientific Director of a Canada-wide network of researchers conducting Value Chain Optimization (VCO) research for the forest products sector. He is a founding Fellow of PAPTAC, a past President of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE), and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE).
